Stupak Stands Firm on Amendment

This morning, Rep. Bart Stupak spoke to Fox News in response to statements made by White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod. Axelrod said that President Obama disapproves of the pro-life Stupak amendment, and would step to defeat the pro-life language in the health care reform bill if necessary. According to his advisor, President Obama believes that the Stupak amendment must be stripped out of the bill because it goes “beyond the status-quo” in regards to women’s access to abortion.
Rep. Stupak stood incredibly firm saying,

“They’re not going to take it out. If they do, health care will not move forward,” “We won fair and square. … That’s why Mr. Axelrod’s not a legislator. He doesn’t really know what he’s talking about.”

Stupak points out that a majority of Representatives voted for the pro-life language, and that’s as democratic as it gets! If the Senate version of the bill comes back for a final vote and the pro-life amendment is not included, Rep. Stupak says that anywhere from 10-20 votes could be lost. Those lost votes will not be responsible for killing health care, Stupak said. Indeed, that responsibility will lie with the pro-choice members who tried to thwart the democratic declaration of the majority of Americans and their representatives!

“The majority has spoken. Most people agree — do not use public funds for abortion,” he said. “You’re not going to summarily start dismissing amendments which the majority of the House of Representatives wanted because some person, David Axelrod or someone, doesn’t like it.”

Congratulations to the people of Michigan for electing such a steadfast, pro-life representative. Stay strong, Rep. Stupak!
