On what was otherwise a no-good-news Monday, Kathryn Lopez posted this piece of silver lining (A Digital New Feminist Revolution) over at National Review Online.
“Signs of Hope” is the tag line for a brand new type of pro-life legislation…that might even be termed pro-choice.
How many times have you heard a woman who suffered an abortion talk about how she felt she had no choice? How many times has a woman said that, even though she wanted to keep her baby, she felt compelled to abort? In my experience, I see a hint of remorse or regret in nearly every story about abortion I read. The words, “I had no choice,” ring in my ears. It’s ironic how a movement that championed choice so often seems to force the “choice” of abortion on women in difficult situations.
But the Signs of Hope Act (full text) in Louisiana may indicate a new trend in reaching out to women facing unplanned pregnancies. The law, which will go into effect this November, mandates abortion clinics to post a sign that looks like this:
Planned Parenthood, of course, called these signs “condescending” and “offensive.” The response of Dorinda Bordlee, who helped draft the legislation, to such criticism is truly elegant:
“It never ceases to amaze me when abortion advocates take the patronizing attitude that we should hide information from women because of their fragile emotional state. Women are strong and intelligent. Each of us deserves the dignity of full information.”
Now that’s refreshing. After decades of counterfeit feminism repeatedly telling women that they can’t possibly have their children, the truth is finally coming out. Women facing unplanned pregnancies are not alone. Resources are available. Abortion isn’t the only option. Women do have a choice – you can choose to keep your baby. You don’t have to sacrifice your child’s life in order to fulfill your own.
Women deserve “the dignity of full information.”
One day closer to that day when abortion is no more than a distant nightmare and the world is filled with the giggles of children who were given the right to live and the smiles of women who didn’t “have to” choose abortion.
