Senators and Pro-Life Advocates Call for Senate Vote on 20-Week Bill

On May 13, 2014, one year after Kermit Gosnell was convicted for the murder of three infants and manslaughter of refugee mother Karnamaya Mongar, Senator Lindsey Graham called for Harry Reid to stand with him for Gosnell’s victims. Senator Graham asked Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (also known as the 20-week abortion limit) up for a vote.

Self-described pro-life Harry Reid stubbornly refused, but the day didn’t end there.

Our own Marjorie Dannenfelser led a press conference with the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Graham, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and distinguished heads of other pro-life organizations including NRLC, AUL, FRC, CWA, and Catholic Association to continue the call for a vote.

At the press conference on Capitol Hill, Sen. Graham focused on the United States’ extreme abortion policy, quoting the Charlotte Lozier Institute’s research: “In the entire world, there are seven countries that allow elective abortions at the 20-week period and beyond. My goal is to make sure when this is over, there are six.”

Marjorie reminded the Senate that they can not ignore legislation that saves babies’ lives after 20 weeks and claim to represent the American people:

This legislation, which according to five major national polls is supported by the majority of Americans, would protect babies and women from the horrific violence of abortion beyond 20 weeks.

According to WebMD, at 20 weeks, the unborn child in the womb measures about 5 to 6 inches and weighs about 9 ounces. The baby can hear sounds – including his mother’s voice, heart and even her growling stomach if she’s hungry!

At abortion clinics nationwide, however, children at this stage are not being treated like the unique human beings with inherent dignity that they are.

Mitch McConnell 20-week press conference

Minority Leader McConnell’s support of the 20-week bill makes it clear that this life-saving legislation is high priority for Republicans.

“Regardless of where you stand on the broader issue,” he said, “We should all agree that unborn children should be protected at least from the point that they’re capable of feeling pain.”
