Health care reform should preserve life

By Rep. Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10)

The health care debate for the most part revolves around the costs of premiums, quality of care, accessibility, and whether our national debt can afford to take on one more dime.  However, the ultimate goal of health care is the preservation of human life. With that in mind, isn’t it astounding that any bill designed to save lives would also include provisions that would destroy the most basic right to life!

The current Senate health care bill and President Barack Obama’s eleven page outline reverse nearly three decades of public policy prohibiting taxpayer funds from being used to subsidize the killing of an unborn child.  Not only does this overturn a long standing precedent, it ignores the will of the majority of Americans.

A recent Zogby poll revealed that 71 percent of Americans oppose tax dollars being used to fund abortions.  Like the majority of Americans, I believe in the sanctity of human life, and I firmly oppose the practice of abortion.  The federal government has a moral and constitutional obligation to protect and defend every precious soul that comes into existence.  Current versions of the health care bill not only fail to preserve these lives, but lend a hand to their destruction.

As a physician, I know on the basis of medical and scientific evidence that human life begins with fertilization.  I am committed to ensuring that not even one tax dollar is used to fund abortion—but I will not stop there.  Each Congress, I introduce the Sanctity of Human Life Act (H.R. 227), which declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being, and is the paramount and most fundamental right of a person.  We must stop this heinous practice of destroying life once and for all.   I hope Americans join me by standing up and speaking out against this atrocious practice.
