Last week in Memphis, Tennessee, pro-abortion Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) announced that the Obama administration has awarded $395,000 in federal funds to Planned Parenthood. The grant defies the state’s previous resolve to defund the abortion provider and preexisting Tennessee laws aimed at preventing government funding of abortion.
In 2011, Tennessee governor Bill Haslam encouraged local public health departments in Memphis to accept all available Title X funds in order to ultimately take funding away from Planned Parenthood facilities and redirect it toward non-abortion-providing health facilities. However, the Obama administration’s recent gift restored the flow of these funds to the abortion provider, ignoring the desire of many Tennesseans.
Thomas Jefferson once stated, “The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object”. President Obama’s action to federally fund an organization that is opposed by the people undermines the purpose of our federal government: to protect the Life, liberty and freedom to pursue happiness of all Americans.
Undercover videos and investigations have exposed Planned Parenthood’s involvement in alleged human sex trafficking, as well as their turning a blind eye to sex-selection abortions in their clinics. As President Obama and his administration continues to bypass the will of the people in order to back Planned Parenthood, one of his largest supporters, the need to elect a pro-life candidate this November could not be more evident.
