This week, in a serious over extension of federal power, President Obama and the Department of Health and Human Services infringed upon New Hampshire’s rights as a state by awarding $1 million in federal funds to Planned Parenthood of New England, which had recently been defunded by the State of New Hampshire. This is yet another example of where the President’s loyalties lie.
In June, the New Hampshire Executive Council exercised its right not to renew a $1.8 million contract with Planned Parenthood. The State of New Hampshire already provides a wide array of women’s health services; the hard working taxpayers of New Hampshire simply didn’t think it within their job description as citizens to finance abortion. However, when they legitimately cut off Planned Parenthood from access to their state funds, it seems the federal arm of the government was more than happy to reach deep into the taxpayer’s other pocket.
This method of leadership- riding roughshod over the will of the people- seems hardly in keeping with the American way or with the spirit of New Hampshire- a state which has one of the greatest of all state mottos “Live Free, or Die.” These are people who value the right to live and to live freely. To be told that they must finance abortion and they will have no say in the matter is definitely not living freely.
In the history of New England, taxation without representation has not been something that has been taken lightly. Today it is especially important as innocent Life is at the very core of this issue. It is important that everyone in New Hampshire stands firm against this explosion of federal power in order to keep the taxpayer out of the abortion business.
