Holding Our Pro-Life Majority in the Senate

Safeguarding our pro-life majority in the U.S. Senate is of the utmost importance if we are to advance our legislative priorities – specifically the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, defunding the nation’s biggest abortion business Planned Parenthood, and protecting the conscience rights of taxpayers and health care providers.

In the 2016 election cycle, Republicans are defending 24 Senate seats, compared to Democrats defending only ten. That means Democrats only need to win five seats in order to take the majority in the Senate, and potentially only four seats, should Hillary Clinton win this November.

Of the Senators who face tough re-election battles this cycle, the following are pro-life: John McCain (AZ), Marco Rubio (FL), Chuck Grassley (IA), Roy Blunt (MO), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Richard Burr (NC), Rob Portman (OH), Pat Toomey (PA), and Ron Johnson (WI). In addition, there are two open Senate seats this cycle which are considered “toss-up” races. They include Indiana, which is currently held by Republican Dan Coats, and Nevada, currently held by Democrat Harry Reid.

The abortion lobby’s election efforts are well under way. Groups like EMILYs List, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and NARAL Pro-Choice America are actively working to ensure pro-abortion candidates take control of the Senate. In fact, of the 11 races mentioned above, six of them have candidates who are endorsed by EMILYs List, which opposes even the most modest pro-life reforms.

Pro-life activists have our work cut out for us. Without a majority in the Senate, and certainly if Clinton takes the White House, our legislative priorities including the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act among others, will likely be sidelined.

But there is good news for pro-lifers. Recent polling has come out showing Sens. Marco Rubio, Chuck Grassley, Roy Blunt, Richard Burr, and Rob Portman ahead of their pro-abortion opponents. Susan B. Anthony List is also getting the pro-life message out on the ground, explaining to voters what it means to be pro-life, and urging them to choose the pro-life candidate when they go to the polls.

For nine months, our canvassers have been talking face-to-face with pro-life voters about what is at stake in 2016 – this week, we knocked on the 500,000th door!

Our ground team is operating in North Carolina, Florida and Ohio – three states critical to defeating Hillary Clinton and also three states currently represented by Senators – Sens. Burr, Rubio, and Portman – who have stood for life at every single opportunity. Their opponents support abortion on-demand, up to the moment of birth, funded by taxpayers.

Our canvassers are making sure every pro-life voter – as well as persuadable pro-life Democrats and Hispanics – know which leaders protect life and which leaders stand with the radical abortion lobby. Please keep our canvassing team in your prayers in the coming months!
