Children’s Day in China?

“Children’s Day:” (noun) A yearly event, held on June 1st, is a national holiday in China for the purpose of celebrating… children.

How ironic that China, of all nations, would establish a national holiday to champion the very same asset that they strive to control through forced abortion and sterilization.  In fact, yesterday at a Congressional hearing, Rep. Chris Smith (R- NJ) reported that up to 35,000 forced abortions are performed daily in China, all because of the One Child Policy.

While a Chinese family (with only one child, of course) may have tromped to the Shanghai Zoo to celebrate the holiday yesterday, hundreds of thousands of women were undergoing forced abortions:  every 2.4 seconds, a pregnancy is terminated due to the strict enforcement of China’s one-child policy, according to LifeNews.com.

Envision a banner with this government-sponsored slogan accosting your eyes on your daily commute to work in your city: “Abort it! Kill it! Terminate it! You just cannot give birth to him or her.”  The result of this policy? Forced abortions and sterilization, infanticide, and serious educational and medical neglect of children, particularly girls, born following the allotted one child per family policy. A severe discrimination against females occurs through gender-selective ultrasounds: hence, an increase in voluntary abortions of females.  Females are more likely than males to pursue suicide. “The suicide rate among Chinese women is five times the world average, and it is the No. 1 cause of death for rural Chinese women ages 15 to 34. Before Children’s Day is over, more than 500 women will have taken their own lives.” This partiality for males has had unforeseen consequences. A severe gender imbalance is now obvious and will cause serious dilemmas.  USA Today reported:

“The results of this social engineering? Nearly 100 million missing girls, and a growing gender imbalance where more than 120 boys are being born for every 100 girls. In some rural provinces the numbers are even more lopsided, with 130 boys being born for every 100 women….
“According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in just 10 years there will be 30 million to 40 million more boys than girls under the age of 20 in China.”

Just where are the males to find spouses in a shortage of women? The crime rate is likely to rise as a result of China’s violent and misconceived population-control tactics.   Though the U.S. State Department and Amnesty International have condemned this policy, the horrid practice of selective pregnancies and forced abortions will continue.

Rather than a joyous celebration on Children’s Day, perhaps it ought to be observed in mournful reflection of the 400 million babies that never received the chance to live, let alone participate in a celebration of their childhood.
