SBA List Urges Senate to Pass Priority Bills Protecting Abortion Survivors and Pain-Capable Unborn Children

Washington, D.C.  – Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act as hundreds of thousands of Americans converge on Washington for the annual March for Life, which President Trump will address via live video stream from the White House.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) released the following statement in response:

“Justice and compassion took a great leap forward today,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “We thank Leader McCarthy and our allies in the House for holding a timely vote on this crucial bill, as hundreds of thousands of pro-life Americans rally at Congress’ doorstep. We urge the Senate follow their colleagues’ lead and pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act as well as the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end cruel late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy.”

Melissa Ohden, who survived a saline abortion in 1977, and SBA List’s National Campaign Chair Jill Stanek, a former nurse who witnessed late-term babies born alive during abortion procedures and left to die, were present for the vote.

SBA List’s National Campaign Chair Jill Stanek said, “Horrific crimes are taking place in abortion facilities around the country. Children born alive are denied medical care and left to die – cold, alone, abandoned and discarded like medical waste. This is infanticide, plain and simple. Everyone should be able to agree on equal protection under the law for these children.”

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act strengthens legislation passed in 2002 that extended legal protection to infants born alive during a failed abortion.

A new poll released today by SBA List finds broad support for legislation limiting late-term abortion. McLaughlin & Associates conducted the online survey of 1,000 likely voters October 9-13, 2017.

The poll found that nearly two-thirds of all voters (62%) support legislation that would prohibit abortions after five months of pregnancy, including:

  • Two-thirds of Independent women (66%)
  • 58% of college educated women
  • Nearly half of all Democrats (48%), and
  • A majority of both moderates (58%) and undecided voters

This is consistent with previous nationwide polling by Marist, the polling company, inc./WomanTrend, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News finding that a plurality or majority of Americans support limiting late-term abortion, women in higher numbers than men.

President Donald Trump has made four key commitments to the pro-life movement, including signing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law. The White House has issued a statement of support for the bill.

Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 600,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
