Washington, D.C. – Today the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution will hold a hearing on the Women’s Health Protection Act titled, Protecting Roe: Why We Need the Women’s Health Protection Act. The legislation would expand abortion on demand by preventing enforcement of existing laws that protect unborn children at the federal and state level and also blocking states from passing new pro-life laws.

“The deceptively named ‘Women’s Health Protection Act’ is an extreme federal takeover that would directly attack the rights of the American people to enact and enforce pro-life laws through their duly elected legislators,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

“Washington Democrats are dramatically out of touch when it comes to abortion. Americans nationwide want to humanize our laws by passing reasonable limits on abortion, not expand abortion on-demand by a federal mandate that would block existing protections for women and their unborn children.”

Abortion survivor Melissa Ohden, Founder and Director of the Abortion Survivors Network will testify against the legislation. She commented:

“How can access to abortion, the very act that should have ended my life, simultaneously be a fundamental right to exercise? Life is the foundation of all other rights… everyone in this room was granted the privilege to retain that right – a privilege I was denied. A privilege my unprotected population of abortion survivors were denied.”

Catherine Glenn Foster, President and CEO of Americans United for Life, will also testify in opposition to the legislation.

Peer reviewed studies show that the impact of abortion is nearly four times higher for women and families in the black community.

Reintroduction of this legislation came shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review the Dobbs late-term abortion case, in which they will specifically consider the constitutionality of pre-viability limits on abortion. SBA List recently launched a video ad campaign asserting the humanity of unborn children.

Recent polling shows that the majority of Americans reject abortion extremism and the politicians who support it.

SBA List is a network of more than 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
