Kaine “Not Personally for Repeal” but will Stand by Hillary’s Attempt to End Longstanding, Bipartisan Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This afternoon a Clinton-Kaine spokesperson said that although Sen. Tim Kaine “is not personally for repeal of the Hyde Amendment” he will not stand in the way of Hillary Clinton’s proposal to end the longstanding bipartisan policy preventing taxpayer funding of elective abortions under Medicaid.

This is the second time in 24 hours Tim Kaine has flipped his position on abortion. Yesterday CNN reported Kaine made a “private” agreement with Clinton to support her plan to repeal the policy, a promise she made to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business.

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser offered the following comment:

“Sen. Kaine’s personal opposition to abortion and federal funding of abortion does nothing to relieve the majority of Americans who do not wish to pay for abortion on-demand through their taxpayer dollars.

“You cannot be ‘personally’ opposed to the destruction of innocent human life and take no action to stop it. Voters should not be fooled by Tim Kaine. There is no daylight between him and Hillary Clinton on this issue. They are absolute extremists pushing the Democratic Party further and further left on abortion, alienating the one-third of Democrats who call themselves pro-life.

“Susan B. Anthony List’s ground team has already knocked on more than 466,000 doors in battleground states reaching voters – including pro-life Democrats – confident that the Clinton-Kaine position in support of abortion on-demand, up until the moment of birth, at taxpayer’s expense, will be rejected at the ballot box.”

A new Marist poll released Monday found that a majority of Americans (62 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion including 45 percent of those who say they are “pro-choice” and 44 percent of Democrats.

The call to repeal Hyde contradicts the position previously taken by several Democratic Senators, including Bob Casey, Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, and Joe Manchin, who have all previously said they oppose forcing taxpayers to fund abortion.

Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $15.25 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
