Dannenfelser: Stefanik’s Win Rights a Wrong Began in 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) declared victory when pro-life Elise Stefanik won in New York’s 21st congressional district.

“Political elites once posited that only a pro-abortion Republican could win in the North Country. That inaccuracy led to the nomination of Dede Scozzafava in 2009 – the pro-abortion Republican woman who ended up dropping out just days before Election Day, handing the seat to Democrat Bill Owens,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Stefanik’s victory confirms that a candidate who is articulate and willing to defend life can win in the bluest of states.”

“North Country voters have elected an accomplished and strong pro-life woman leader,” continued Dannenfelser. “Her youth and passion for promoting the dignity of each human life will make her an excellent addition to the growing list of pro-life women in Washington.”

Stefanik is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Last month, the SBA List’s Women Speak Out PAC launched a $25,000 radio ad campaign in support of Stefanik. The SBA List Candidate Fund endorsed Stefanik in March and SBA List members have bundled more than $34,000 in direct campaign contributions.

In 2009 after the nomination of Dede Scozzafava, the Susan B. Anthony List launched a shadow campaign in support of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. The campaign ultimately caused Scozzafava to drop out of the contest and endorse Democrat Bill Owens. Hoffman lost by 2.3 percent of the vote.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $15.25 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
