Washington, D.C.  – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) issued the following statement following passage of the South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act, which limits abortion in the state after the point by which a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

“The beating hearts of unborn children should awaken the conscience of our nation to the tragedy and reality of abortion – which deprives innocent children of the fundamental right to life,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “There is a growing momentum to protect life, grounded in science and compassion, by recognizing the humanity of unborn boys and girls. South Carolina lawmakers are acting on the will of the people in their state who want to protect life and to ensure women have true knowledge of the developing child within them.

“We thank Governor McMaster and Lt. Governor Evette for their leadership on behalf of life in South Carolina, and all our pro-life allies in the legislature for their tireless advocacy for this lifesaving measure.”

South Carolina joins Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana, Ohio, Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, and North Dakota in limiting abortions as early as a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

SBA List endorsed Governor McMaster and Lieutenant Governor Evette in 2018.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
