Chemical Abortion At Least 4 Times Riskier Compared to Surgical Abortion

Washington, D.C.Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem for taking executive action to block the distribution of dangerous chemical abortion drugs through telemedicine in the state. The order sets the following restrictions on chemical abortion drugs:

  • Declares abortion drugs may only be used when prescribed by a physician in-person.
  • Blocks distribution of chemical abortion drugs via telemedicine.
  • Prevents chemical abortion drugs from being distributed in schools or on state grounds.
  • Ensures that licensed physicians properly administer informed consent laws.
  • Requires development of licensing requirements for abortion providers who only provide chemical abortions.
  • Increases accuracy and frequency of reporting chemical abortion rates and complications.

Governor Noem stated:

“The Biden administration is continuing to overstep its authority and suppress legislatures that are standing up for the unborn to pass strong pro-life laws. They are working right now to make it easier to end the life of an unborn child via telemedicine abortions. That is not going to happen in South Dakota, I will continue working with the legislature and my Unborn Child Advocate to ensure that South Dakota remains a strong pro-life state.”

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser added:

“We commend Governor Noem for taking this bold action that will save lives from dangerous chemical abortions, which have a fourfold higher rate of complications compared to surgical abortion. The Biden administration would turn every post office and pharmacy into an abortion center if they had their way, leaving women alone and at risk of severe heavy bleeding, physical, emotional, and psychological stress, and more. States must take action. Governor Noem is setting a courageous model today that we hope more state leaders across the nation will soon follow.”

During COVID-19, the Biden administration removed federal safeguards for women against chemical abortion and has thus far failed to reinstate them. Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives led by Rep. Carolyn Maloney have issued a resolution pushing for these safeguards to be permanently removed.

Noem has previously signed into law measures that ensure babies born alive after failed abortions receive medical care and that stop lethal discrimination abortions based on a Down syndrome diagnosis.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
