McMaster also seeks federal approval to cut off Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding

Washington, D.C. – This afternoon the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster for signing an executive order to stop state funding of abortion businesses including Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain.

Additionally, Gov. McMaster has told the S.C. Department of Health and Human Services to request waivers from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services so that the state can stop Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthoods in South Carolina.  Funds would instead be available to comprehensive health care alternatives.

“We thank Governor McMaster for acting to ensure taxpayers fund comprehensive primary and preventative care for women and families, not abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood. Abortion is not health care,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

“Governor McMaster’s additional request that South Carolina be allowed to cut off Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding through Medicaid and instead fund community health centers should be granted.  The Trump Administration should immediately offer the same Medicaid flexibility to all states. Federally supported comprehensive health care entities outnumber the abortion chain by more than 20 to one nationwide, and by a whopping 134 to one in South Carolina.

“Planned Parenthood, the nation’s biggest seller of abortion – 323,999 abortions in a single year per their latest annual report – does not need or deserve taxpayer dollars.”

Planned Parenthood controls more than 35 percent of the national market for abortions and is not a significant provider of medical care in the United States. According to its most recent annual report, it performed 323,999 abortions in a single year, and nearly one million over the past three years.

President Trump has made four specific commitments to the pro-life movement, including reallocating Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding to comprehensive, whole-woman health care centers.

Susan B. Anthony List and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
