Senator Manchin claims to be pro-life but votes for taxpayer-funded abortion

Washington, D.C.  – Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced that its field team of 77 canvassers visited nearly 110,000 West Virginia voters ahead of Election Day to elect pro-life Patrick Morrisey and defeat incumbent Senator Joe Manchin, and to pass Amendment 1, which stops taxpayer funding of elective abortions under Medicaid. Additionally, SBA List held eight in-state media events, reached 94,462 voters through persuasive voter contact mail and digital ads, and made 27,040 live voter calls.

“Senator Manchin claims to be pro-life, but just days ago he betrayed West Virginia taxpayers yet again, announcing he would vote against Amendment 1, which would protect taxpayers from being forced to fund abortion on-demand through Medicaid,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “SBA List’s field team has visited nearly 110,000 West Virginia voters who don’t consistently get to the polls to educate them about Senator Manchin’s record of voting for taxpayer-funded abortion – including sending taxpayer dollars to abortion giant Planned Parenthood – as well as the 1,500 precious lives Amendment 1 will save each year. Pro-life voters of the Mountain State have had enough of Joe Manchin.”

SBA List’s field team of more than 1,100 canvassers visited 2.7 million voters this election cycle across the battleground states of West Virginia, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Montana, Florida, Ohio, Arizona, and Tennessee. A complete list of SBA List’s efforts to mobilize the pro-life vote in the 2018 election cycle can be viewed here.

Last week SBA List held four press conferences across the Mountain State with Delegate Kayla Kessinger (R-Fayetteville) as a part of an overall $500,000 campaign to educate West Virginia voters on Amendment 1. The campaign included television, radio, and digital advertising, as well as voter contact mail.

This summer the SBA List team held a series of press conferences across West Virginia urging Sen. Manchin to respect the will of his constituents by supporting the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. The group also aired two television ads on broadcast and cable as well as two radio ads as part of a total $1.6 million issue advocacy campaign exposing Sen. Manchin’s support for taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business.

SBA List is dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders. SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
