Tester Doubles Down on Abortion On-Demand Through Birth, a Major Political Liability with Constituents

Washington, D.C.  – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today slammed U.S. Senator Jon Tester for his vote against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (“Micah’s Law”), which would protect unborn children from late-term abortion after five months of pregnancy, a point by which science shows they can feel pain.

SBA List immediately launched testertooextreme.com and a hard-hitting digital ad campaign to expose Sen. Tester’s extremist views on abortion which are dramatically out of step with the majority of Montana voters. The digital campaign will back up the group’s existing ground efforts. Since July 2017, SBA List’s 200+ canvassing team has knocked on more than 320,000 doors across Florida, Missouri, Ohio, and Indiana, with plans to expand.

Polling data commissioned by SBA List and made widely available last fall shows that 63 percent of Montana voters support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and 59 percent said they would be less likely to support Senator Tester if he voted to allow late-term abortion.

“Senator Tester’s vote in support of brutal late-term abortions isn’t just morally abhorrent, it defies national consensus and is a major political liability. Shame on Senator Tester for doubling down in support of abortion on-demand, up until the moment of birth,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The United States is one of only seven nations – including China and North Korea – that allow brutal late-term abortions after five months. Like most Americans, a majority of Montana voters want to change the law to protect children more than halfway through pregnancy. Tester failed to stand with his constituents, but he’ll face them at the ballot box in November.”

Support for the legislation is especially high among millennials (78 percent), African-Americans (70 percent), and Hispanics (57 percent). Several national polls have found that as many as 51 percent of Democrats support limiting abortion after twenty weeks.

President Trump has made four key commitments to the pro-life movement, including signing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law.

Susan B. Anthony List and its connected super PAC, Women Speak Out spent more than $18 million in the 2016 election cycle, knocking on more than 1.1 million doors in battleground states to defeat Hillary Clinton and maintain a pro-life Senate. SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 600,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
