47 Senate Democrats Voted to Block Hyde Protections, Force Taxpayers to Pay for Abortion on Demand
Washington, D.C. – Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) slammed U.S. Senate Democrats’ so-called American Rescue Plan for forcing taxpayers to fund abortion on demand.
As passed by the Senate, the bill allows taxpayer funding for abortion contrary to the decades-old Hyde Amendment that has applied to every other COVID-19 relief package. SBA List yesterday issued a letter indicating its intent to score against the bill, which now goes back to the House of Representatives for a final vote.
“Shame on Senate Democrats who exploited COVID-19 relief to expand taxpayer-funded abortion on demand, breaking with more than four decades of bipartisan consensus. The strong majority of Americans, including millions of rank-and-file Democrats, oppose forcing taxpayers to pay for abortions,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “We thank Senators Daines and Lankford for their heroic efforts to fix this bill, as well as the three Senate Democrats who stood up to extremists in their party and voted with all their Republican colleagues in favor of Hyde protections, showing that life is not a partisan issue.
“Tragically, it was not enough to overcome radical pro-abortion Democrats emboldened under the Biden-Harris administration. The so-called American Rescue Plan is disastrous for unborn children and their mothers. Susan B. Anthony List will work tirelessly to educate voters so their senators are held accountable.”
A Marist/Knights of Columbus poll released earlier this year found that 58% percent of Americans – including 65% of Independents and nearly one third of Democrats – oppose using taxpayer money to fund abortions in the United States.
