62% of Maine Voters Oppose Taxpayer-funded Abortion, Including Significant Numbers of Democrats, Independents, Women, and Pro-choice Voters
Washington, D.C. – Today Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills signed legislation into law that expands taxpayer funding of abortion in MaineCare and forces private insurers to pay for abortions, at an estimated cost to taxpayers of more than $1.3 million through FY 2023. Earlier this week Mills signed legislation to allow physician assistants and other non-doctors to perform abortions.
On Wednesday Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed legislation to expand abortion on demand through birth, allow non-doctors to perform abortions, repeal the state’s ban on partial birth abortion, and more.
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) slammed Maine lawmakers’ expansion of abortion on demand in a statement:
“We are grieved to see Maine vying with New York and Illinois in the dishonorable contest to prove who can be the most radically pro-abortion state in the country,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “These extreme new laws show an appalling disregard for women’s health and safety, as well as for the will of the taxpayers, who will be forced to finance the destruction of more than 350 innocent unborn children a year. Nearly two thirds of Maine voters – including significant numbers of Democrats, Independents, women, and even self-described pro-choice voters – oppose taxpayer funding of abortion. Shame on Governor Mills and the legislature for siding with the extreme abortion lobby against their own constituents.”
Polling released last month by SBA List and the Christian Civic League of Maine found that 62 percent of Maine voters – including 60 percent of Independents, 44 percent of Democrats, 64 percent of women, and over a third (38%) of self-described pro-choice voters – oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
SBA List is a network of more than 787,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
