Removing the Filibuster Would Pave the Way for Extreme Biden-Harris Democrats to Pass H.R. 1, Expand the Supreme Court, Impose Abortion On Demand

Washington, D.C.  – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) issued the following statement thanking U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) after he reiterated his commitment to opposing elimination of the filibuster or changes to it, including carving out exceptions related to specific types of legislation. When asked specifically about an exception to the filibuster for H.R. 1, the so-called “For the People Act,” Manchin is reported to have said: “No. no. no.”

“We thank Senator Manchin for standing up for West Virginia’s pro-life values by recommitting his support for the filibuster,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The pro-abortion extremists controlling Washington want to eliminate the legislative filibuster so they can force taxpayer-funded abortions and expand the size of the Supreme Court, filling it with pro-abortion justices. They also want to eliminate it so that Washington can seize control of elections, overriding all state election laws. We thank Senator Manchin for being a voice of reason in his party, and are mobilizing our activists in the state to thank him and encourage him to stand strong in his commitment.”

Susan B. Anthony List’s ongoing six-figure campaign to thank Senator Manchin includes radio ads, digital ads, a grassroots phone call campaign, polling, and a statewide media tour.

A February 2021 poll commissioned by SBA List and conducted by West Virginia-based Mark Blankenship Enterprises found that most West Virginia voters are opposed to federal policy that would only be made possible if the filibuster is removed:

  • 64% of WV voters strongly oppose expanding the Supreme Court to add more justices
  • 62% of WV voters strongly oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion in the U.S.
  • 64% of WV voters strongly oppose using American taxpayer dollars to promote abortion overseas

Further, 75% of West Virginia voters said it is very important that their U.S. Senator does what is right for West Virginia, even if it means voting against their party.

In 2018, West Virginians voted for a pro-life amendment to their state constitution. SBA List’s West Virginia field team was active on the ground, visiting more than 110,000 voters in the Mountain State urging them to vote yes on Amendment 1.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
