Current Law Allows Abortion on Demand Through Birth and Even Beyond

Washington, D.C. – Puerto Rico’s Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz announced today that the Senate has the votes to override Governor Ricardo Rosselló’s promised veto of the “Law for the Protection of Women and the Preservation of Life” (PS 950), one day after the Puerto Rican House of Representatives voted to override the veto. The bill would require medical care for viable babies born alive in failed abortions, informed consent for women seeking abortions and parental consent for minors, and health and safety standards for abortion facilities.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) responded:

“Yesterday’s historic vote shows popular momentum to pass pro-life laws. Legislators showed political courage in standing up to pro-abortion Governor Rosselló,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Puerto Ricans, like most Americans, reject the extreme status quo of abortion on demand through birth and even beyond. They are speaking clearly through their representatives and the governor should respect their will. We are honored to stand with them and urge the Puerto Rican Senate to press forward to enact this vital bill.”

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
