Washington, D.C. Today the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced a digital ad campaign to educate North Carolina voters about Governor Roy Cooper’s extreme record in support of abortion on demand and even infanticide following his recent veto of legislation to protect babies born alive following failed abortions. The ads are part of a $200,000 national effort targeting pro-abortion Democrat governors who are blocking born-alive legislation.

Last week the state Senate voted to override Gov. Cooper’s veto of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S.B. 359). Democrat Senator Don Davis (Greene) joined 29 Republican senators voting to override.

SBA List and NC Values Coalition will host a rally and prayer vigil Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern at the state capitol in support of the veto override. Abortion survivor Claire Culwell will speak alongside local and national pro-life leaders.

“Shame on Governor Cooper for siding with extremists against innocent children and the will of his constituents,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, a North Carolina native. “North Carolina citizens are appalled by the extreme agenda on display in New York, Virginia, and several other states, as well as by Democratic Party leaders in Congress who have repeatedly blocked compassionate, popular legislation to protect vulnerable babies who survive abortions. It is no wonder the state Senate, including brave Democrat Senator Don Davis, stood up to him and we urge their House colleagues to do likewise. Governor Cooper is radically out of step with North Carolinians.”

Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest said of the override vote, “Good first step to ensuring the life of a newborn is protected. My hope is that those members of the House that are needed to override this veto have the same moral and ethical courage as the members of the Senate.”

Nearly 200 members of Congress have signed a discharge petition filed by House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) to hold a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. House Democratic Party leaders have refused more than 35 requests by members to vote on the bill. If a majority of representatives sign the petition, it will force a vote by the full House.

Nationwide polling released by SBA List finds that 77 percent of voters support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age (55 percent strongly support).

President Donald Trump has consistently called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide, following efforts in New York and Virginia to legalize abortion on demand through birth.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
