Pro-life Woman on Track to Replace Outgoing Pro-abortion Republican

Washington, D.C.  Tonight the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) declared victory when its endorsed candidate Claudia Tenney won her primary in New York’s 22nd Congressional District. Tenney’s hard-fought primary victory puts her on track to capture a seat being vacated by retiring pro-abortion Republican, Richard Hanna.

“Tonight, New York voters sent a strong message in supporting Claudia Tenney, a proven champion of the unborn and women,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Susan B. Anthony List is encouraged to see her advance one step closer to Washington. Her bold pro-life, pro-woman leadership has been invaluable in the New York Assembly and will be a welcome addition in Congress.”

Tenney defeated two primary opponents including Steve Wells, who was endorsed by retiring Rep. Richard Hanna. Throughout the primary, Wells refused to make his position on abortion clear. Tenney will face Democrat Kim Myers in the general election. It is ranked a “toss up” by Cook Political Report.

In the New York Assembly, Tenney sponsored the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation that would protect babies more than halfway through pregnancy, when science shows they can feel pain. She has received the endorsement of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms PAC, a leading voice for unborn children and a key state ally of SBA List. She also serves as a member of the SBA List’s National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, which organizes and supports pro-life women who hold elected office at the state level.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $16.71 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
