Eight Democrats Join Senate Republicans, Decisively Rejecting Expansion of Abortion on Demand Through Birth

Washington, D.C. – New Mexico lawmakers yesterday defeated a bill, similar to others enacted in New York and proposed in Virginia, Illinois, and Vermont, that would have repealed New Mexico’s pro-life laws and expanded abortion on demand through birth. The Democrat-led Senate voted 24-18 against H.B. 51, which passed the House last month and was backed by Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised the vote in a statement:

“We rejoice with the people of New Mexico for this decisive pro-life victory,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.  “We are grateful to our allies who fought a tenacious battle to stop this outrageous abortion expansion bill and to all the state lawmakers who voted against it – especially the eight courageous Democrats who stood up to party leaders both in New Mexico and across the nation. The modern Democratic Party’s agenda of abortion on demand through the moment of birth and even beyond is deeply unpopular with the majority of Americans, including rank and file Democrats.”

A recent Marist poll shows a dramatic shift in how Americans identify on the abortion issue since January: 34 percent of Democrats identify as pro-life, 61 percent pro-choice (compared to 20 percent and 75 percent, respectively). The poll also found that among voters under the age of 45, 47 percent identify as pro-life and 48% pro-choice (compared to 28 percent and 65 percent, respectively).

In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide, following efforts in New York and Virginia to legalize abortion on demand through birth. President Trump also called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation that would stop late-term abortions after five months.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
