Multi-State “Summer of Life” Campaign Raises Awareness of Legislation to Limit Abortions After 20 Weeks, or 5 Months

Washington, D.C. – On Friday, August 29, national pro-life groups Susan B. Anthony List, Students for Life of America, Family Research Council Action, and Concerned Women for America will conclude the multi-state “Summer of Life” tour in Little Rock, Arkansas. The campaign aims to bring awareness to the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation to limit abortions after 5 months – or more than halfway through pregnancy. The bill is currently being blocked in the U.S. Senate by Majority Leader Harry Reid and his pro-abortion allies including Senator Mark Pryor.

“The United States is currently only one of seven countries, including China and North Korea, to allow abortion on demand after 5 months. That’s more than halfway through pregnancy,” said Marilyn Musgrave, Susan B. Anthony List Vice President of Government Affairs. “Last summer the U.S. House took action by passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Unfortunately that legislation has languished in the U.S. Senate, where pro-abortion Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his allies like Senator Mark Pryor have refused to even allow a vote. The SBA List is proud to partner with this pro-life coalition to draw attention to Senator Pryor’s refusal to stand up for babies capable of feeling pain and their mothers.”

The Summer of Life tour made previous stops this week in Colorado and North Carolina, where Sens. Mark Udall and Kay Hagan have also refused to support the legislation.

The U.S. House passed companion legislation in June 2013 by a vote of 228-196. The Senate bill introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has 40 cosponsors. National polling by Quinnipiac, National Journal, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News all found that a plurality or majority of Americans support limiting abortion after 20 weeks and that women support the measure in higher proportions than men.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
