Multi-State “Summer of Life” Campaign Raises Awareness of Legislation to Limit Abortions After 20 Weeks, or 5 Months

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, August 27, the North Carolina Values Coalition and the Susan B. Anthony List will join Students for Life of America, Family Research Council Action, and Concerned Women for America in Charlotte for the North Carolina stop of the multi-state “Summer of Life” tour. The campaign will bring awareness to the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation to limit abortions after 5 months – or more than halfway through pregnancy. The bill is currently being blocked in the U.S. Senate by Majority Leader Harry Reid and his pro-abortion allies including Senator Kay Hagan.

North Carolina Event: Wednesday, August 27, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

“The United States is currently only one of seven countries, including China and North Korea, to allow abortion on demand after 5 months. That’s more than halfway through pregnancy. When it comes to killing a child who is fully capable of feeling the pain of abortion, the majority of Americans agree that is too far.” said Tami Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the NC Values Coalition. “Last summer the U.S. House took action by passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Sadly, that legislation has languished in the U.S. Senate, where Harry Reid is backed by pro-abortion allies like Senator Kay Hagan. We are proud to partner with this pro-life coalition to draw attention to Senator Hagan’s refusal to stand up for babies capable of feeling pain and their mothers.”

The Summer of Life tour will travel to Colorado and Arkansas, where Sens. Mark Udall and Mark Pryor have also refused to support the legislation.

The U.S. House passed companion legislation in June 2013 by a vote of 228-196. The Senate bill introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has 40 cosponsors. National polling by Quinnipiac, National Journal, Huffington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post/ABC News all found that a plurality or majority of Americans support limiting abortion after 20 weeks and that women support the measure in higher proportions than men.

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.

The North Carolina Values Coalition works with a network of Christians around the state to promote public policy and pass legislation that positively impacts our state’s families and promotes a culture in which human life is valued, marriage and families flourish, and religious liberty thrives.
