218 Members of Congress Back President’s Veto of Pro-abortion Bills

Washington, D.C. – This morning President Trump issued a letter promising to veto any legislation that may weaken federal pro-life policy. The President announced the letter in a video message to participants in the March for Life, the nation’s largest annual pro-life demonstration.

“Today President Trump sent a bold message to Nancy Pelosi that popular pro-life policies like the Hyde Amendment that save unborn children and protect taxpayers are here to stay, despite her extreme attacks,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “A strong majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, domestically and abroad. President Trump is the most pro-life president our nation has seen and is keeping his promise to the pro-life Americans who swept him into office. Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats can continue pushing an extreme pro-abortion agenda at their own political peril.”

Earlier this week Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) sent letters signed by 49 Senators and 169 House Members urging President Trump to reject any legislation that would undermine federal pro-life protections and making clear their commitment to sustaining such a veto. Both President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush issued pro-life commitment letters during their terms in office.  As Rep. Smith pointed out, “President George H.W. Bush released his letter and kept his word, issuing three pro-life vetoes. All three were upheld by the House of Representatives.”

President Trump’s announcement comes on the heels of a vote in the U.S. Senate last night to permanently codify the Hyde Amendment. The bill was filibustered by Senate Democrats. House Democrats have vowed to repeal the Hyde Amendment and, on the first day of the new Congress, acted to undo President Trump’s Global Protect Life Policy which prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to support foreign groups that perform or promote abortion overseas.

Marist polling released this week reveals most Americans (54 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion at home and 75 percent oppose using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion abroad, including 80 percent of Independents, 56 percent of Democrats, and 64 percent of people who call themselves pro-choice.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
