Includes Large Majorities of Democrats, Independents, Women, Pro-choice Voters
Washington, D.C. – A new poll released today by Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) finds that 82 percent of Missouri voters – including 66 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of Independents, 83 percent of women, and 61 percent of self-described pro-choice voters – support a law prohibiting late-term abortions (only 18 percent support allowing late-term abortions).
Last month the Missouri House of Representatives passed the Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act (HB 126), which includes provisions limiting late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy, when science shows unborn children can feel pain; declaring the state of Missouri and all its political subdivisions a “sanctuary of life”; banning discriminatory abortions for reasons of sex, race, or Down syndrome; requiring abortionists to have adequate malpractice insurance; and more.
“82 percent of Missouri voters agree the national status quo of abortion on demand through birth under Roe v. Wade is too extreme,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “The United States is one of only seven nations, including China and North Korea, that allow abortion on demand after five months of pregnancy. An overwhelming majority of Missourians across the board – Democrats, Independents, self-described pro-choice voters, women in greater numbers than men – support legislation to stop painful late-term abortions, underscoring how dramatically out of step the Democratic Party’s abortion agenda is with the American people.

Nick Schroer and Mary Elizabeth Coleman, and all their pro-life colleagues for advancing some of the country’s strongest protections for unborn children and their mothers. We urge the state Senate to pass the Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act and look forward to seeing Governor Parson sign it into law.”
“The Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act is the most comprehensive pro-life bill in the country,” said Senator Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis). “With this bill we will protect babies capable of feeling pain. We will protect babies with a beating heart. And, when Roe v. Wade is overturned, we will protect every unborn child in the state of Missouri.”
Governor Mike Parson said of the bill, “As other states in our nation, like New York and Virginia, venture further and further away from the American ideal to uphold the right to life, I’m honored to lead a state with so many people committed to standing up for those without a voice. I applaud the bipartisan efforts of the Missouri House of Representatives for choosing to take a bold stand to protect women’s health and the right to life.”
The Tarrance Group conducted telephone interviews of 400 registered Missouri voters between February 25 and 27, 2019. The margin of error associated with a sample of this type is +/- 4.9% in 95 out of 100 cases.
The poll comes amid nationwide outcry sparked by efforts in New York, Virginia, Vermont, New Mexico, Maryland, and Illinois to legalize abortion on demand through birth, while Democrats in Congress have repeatedly blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, popular legislation to protect babies born alive in failed abortions.
President Trump in his State of the Union address called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide and called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
