Democrats’ Support for Abortion on Demand Isn’t Just Morally Wrong, It’s a Political Liability

Washington, D.C.Today Pelosi Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives voted to advance H.R. 5376, the so-called “Build Back Better” Act, which would dramatically expand taxpayer funding of abortion. Under the bill’s new health care expansion, the federal government would even fund abortions with taxpayer dollars in pro-life states that have currently opted out of abortion funding.

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) will score against the legislation. The score letter reads in part:

“It is critical to remember that whenever abortion is not explicitly excluded from funding, it is included… this so-called Build Back Better Act is shattering status quo principles that Americans should not pay for the destruction of unborn human life. Pro-abortion legislators are funding existing programs and creating new ones outside of the traditional appropriations process, thereby intentionally removing the limitations on funding for abortion. Healthcare should promote life, not aid in its brutal destruction.”

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser added:

“Pelosi and her allies are sneakily working to force Americans to be complicit in abortion on demand up to birth every which way they can. Today she even touted the fact that the popular bipartisan Hyde and Helms amendments, which stop taxpayer funding of abortion both at home and overseas, are simply ‘not in the bill.’

“We thank pro-life House Republicans for exposing the extremism of pro-abortion Democrats. We urge the Senate to add pro-life protections so this massive bill does not see the light of day without the Hyde Amendment, which stops taxpayer funding of abortion and has saved millions of American lives.”

Seventy-seven percent of Americans oppose using taxpayer dollars to promote abortion overseas, and 58% oppose using taxpayer money to fund abortions in the United States.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has stated that legislation that excludes the Hyde Amendment will be “dead on arrival” in the Senate.

Earlier this year SBA List launched a six-figure digital ad campaign exposing the pro-abortion extremism of Democrats for their opposition to Hyde. The campaign targets Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), as well as vulnerable House Democrats up for re-election next year in competitive districts.
