Democratic Leadership Tragically Out-of-Step with Mainstream America

Washington, DC ─ This morning at the 2012 Values Voter Summit, Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan called out President Obama for pandering to the “most extreme elements” of the Democratic party on abortion. Following Ryan’s remarks Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser made the following statement:

“Last week America watched on as advocates from NARAL and Planned Parenthood took the spotlight at the DNC and then as the Democratic Party endorsed an extreme policy of abortion on-demand, at any time, for any reason – all paid for by the taxpayer. Unwilling to heed the warnings from the likes of Jimmy Carter, Democratic Party leadership is tragically out-of-step with mainstream America and the huge number of democrats, nearly a third of who consider themselves ‘pro-life.’

“With polling showing a solid base of support for pro-life policies among Democrats, those Members who have embraced the new abortion extremism have done so at incredible electoral risk. Congressman Joe Donnelly in Indiana, once an ally of the pro-life movement, traded in principle for party during the 2010 debate over health care reform. Unrelenting since then, Donnelly has eschewed the pro-life position by voting against the repeal of the abortion-ridden Obamacare law, putting himself at odds with the people he is seeking to represent in the U.S. Senate.

“Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan got it right – Democrats who take the extreme position on abortion, like Joe Donnelly, are running in the opposite direction of American voters.”

According to a 2011 Gallup poll, 27 percent of Democrats call themselves “pro-life” and 44 percent believe abortion should be illegal in most or all circumstances.

Polling from the Charlotte Lozier Institute found that 77 percent of Americans, and 80 percent of women, support banning sex-selective abortion. Additionally, recent national polling from National Right to Life Committee shows that 63 percent of Americans (70 percent of women) support a ban on late-term abortion past the point at which unborn children feel pain. President Obama has refused to support either ban, both of which were considered by the House of Representatives this year.

The Susan B. Anthony List, and its connected Political Action Committee, the SBA List Candidate Fund, are dedicated to electing candidates and pursuing policies that will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List will emphasize the election, education, promotion, and mobilization of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
