Pro-life Governor Greg Gianforte Will Sign Compassionate, Commonsense Legislation to Protect Babies and Moms
Washington, D.C. – Today the Montana House of Representatives approved four pro-life bills, which will now advance to the state Senate. Newly elected Governor Greg Gianforte (R) has pledged to sign the bills into law when they reach his desk. The four pieces of legislation are:
- HB-136: The Montana Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Lola Sheldon-Galloway (R-22)
- HB-167: The Montana Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Matt Regier (R-04)
- HB-171: Montana Abortion-Inducing Drug Risk Protocol, introduced by Rep. Sharon Greef (R-88)
- HB-140: Require Provision of Information Before the Performance of an Abortion via Ultrasound, introduced by Rep. Amy Regier (R-06)
The bills were each approved by 67-33 party line vote.
“Pro-life legislators in Montana are taking strong action to protect unborn children and women from abortion,” explained Sue Liebel, State Policy Director for Susan B. Anthony List. “Montana is finally on track to become the 24th state to stop gruesome late-term abortions after five months, a point by which unborn babies feel pain inside the womb. Former Governor Steve Bullock, a pro-abortion extremist, previously vetoed this legislation and a commonsense measure to ensure babies born-alive after failed abortions are given proper medical care and attention.
“Legislators are also moving to protect women and ensure mothers have all the information they need prior to making a decision on abortion. Chemical abortion is a risky business which has been promoted heavily by the abortion lobby in the last year as abortion chains like Planned Parenthood exploited the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank the pro-life legislature for taking these vital steps forward to affirm life and protect women and children in Montana.”
A coalition of pro-life Montanans and national pro-life advocates recently testified in person in support of these bills in the Montana House Judiciary Committee. The group was led by the Montana Family Foundation and included leaders from Americans United for Life, Students for Life, Susan B. Anthony List, and scholars from Charlotte Lozier Institute, SBA List’s research arm. The group included young women, students, doctors, and lawyers.
