Ruling by 7th Circuit Court Ignores Will of Hoosier Taxpayers

Washington, D.C. – Today following the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals panel decision to uphold a preliminary injunction of Indiana’s law to defund abortion providers like Planned Parenthood of Medicaid funding, Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) President Marjorie Dannenfelser offered the following comment:

“Over the last two years – as 14 states have introduced or enacted measures to end taxpayer funding of abortion businesses – America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood has been able to rely only on sympathetic courts and the Obama Administration to buck the will of the taxpayers. Despite misinformation from the highest levels – including President Obama’s recent repetition of the falsehood that Planned Parenthood provides mammograms – more and more Americans have concluded that this abortion-centered business does not need or deserve taxpayer dollars. Planned Parenthood may have been handed a victory in the court but is losing, more importantly, in the court of public opinion.

“President Obama touts his top political ally, Planned Parenthood, as a friend of women and young girls, but the numbers tell a different story. In 2010, Planned Parenthood performed more than 329,000 abortions, making up 91 percent of their pregnancy services. For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood performs 392 abortions. Planned Parenthood even opposes commonsense parental notification laws aimed at protecting young girls in abusive situations – and has previously been caught in the act of aiding alleged human traffickers. That’s not options counseling or looking out for the best interests of women, that’s a profit-driven abortion mill. Taxpayers across the country want out of the abortion industry and pro-life lawmakers will not stop until working until every dime of taxpayer funding is cut from Planned Parenthood.”

In 2011, after the Indiana state legislature defunded abortion providers including Planned Parenthood, the Obama Administration threatened to withhold Medicaid funding from Indiana and sought to block the law. The Administration later filed an amicus curiae brief in opposition of the law.

The Susan B. Anthony List, and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates that will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List will emphasize the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
