Party Leaders’ Radical Proposals Would Force Taxpayers to Fund Abortion on Demand
Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) released the following statement regarding a hearing held this morning by Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, “Proposals to Achieve Universal Health Care Coverage”:
“No matter the proposal, Democratic Party leaders’ Medicare-for-All pitches have one thing in common: dramatic expansion of abortion on demand through birth, paid for by taxpayers,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Each makes a radical departure from the Hyde Amendment –longstanding policy that prevents taxpayer funding of abortion and has saved more than 2.25 million lives – and threatens the conscience rights of pro-life health care workers. The overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the Democrats’ extreme agenda. What they may not realize is that the euphemism ‘reproductive health care’ lurking in Medicare for All means abortion on demand for all. Abortion is not health care and we urge Congress to reject any proposal that would force Americans to be complicit in the destruction of innocent human lives.”
Yesterday SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser sent a letter urging members of Congress to oppose any health or spending bill that fails to apply Hyde Amendment principles, with particular concern about H.R. 1384, Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s “Medicare for All Act of 2019.”
A new review by Mary E. Harned, J.D., an associate scholar with SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute, finds that Medicare for All legislation would eliminate Hyde Amendment protections, mandate coverage of abortion on demand, and prohibit future efforts to prevent taxpayer funding of abortion businesses through the program.
