South Carolina Becomes 17th State to Pass Protections for Unborn Babies More than Halfway Through Pregnancy; Sustained Momentum for Long-Overdue Federal Legislation

Washington, D.C.  –South Carolina has become the 17th state to limit abortion after five months – more than halfway through pregnancy – because of the unborn child’s ability to feel pain. Pro-life Governor Nikki Haley signed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law this afternoon. Previously, State Reps. Wendy Nanney and Donna Hicks, both members of the Susan B. Anthony List’s National Pro-life Women’s Caucus, led efforts to advance the bill through the legislature.

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser praised the news, saying:

“We thank Gov. Nikki Haley and Representatives Wendy Nanney and Donna Hicks for their diligent leadership in enacting this compassionate, human-centered measure. The efforts of these women reflect the reality that most Americans – women in higher numbers than men – want to end brutal late-term abortions in this country. Indeed this is the latest victory amid a recent flurry of state-level pro-life activity being led by women lawmakers.

“South Carolina’s win is evidence of sustained momentum to pass this bill on the federal level. A national limit – which would save up to 18,000 unborn lives a year and protect that many women – is long overdue. The U.S. is only one in seven nations to allow late term abortion after the five-month mark. If we take back the White House and protect our pro-life majorities in Congress, we can pass this legislation in 2017. It is not only the morally just thing to do, it is politically smart.”

The Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $16.71 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
