SBA List State Policy Director to Join Gov. Abbott in TX Today for Signing of Safeguards Against Mail-Order Abortion Drugs
Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List celebrates as Texas Governor Greg Abbott today signs safeguards against the expansion of dangerous mail-order chemical abortion drugs into law. S.B. 4 was one of Abbott’s short-list priorities for the recent special legislative session.
SBA List State Policy Director Sue Liebel will join Gov. Abbott on the ground in Texas for the ceremonial bill signing this afternoon at the Texas Values Faith, Family, and Freedom Forum being held this weekend.
Liebel celebrated in a statement:
“Under Gov. Abbott’s leadership, Texas lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have delivered yet another victory for Texas women and their unborn children. The safeguards newly signed into law will stop the expansion of mail-order abortion drugs that are four times as dangerous as surgical abortions. While pro-abortion Democrats in Washington are pushing to turn pharmacies and post offices across America into abortion centers and actively seeking to undermine Texas’ strong pro-life laws, Gov. Abbott and the legislature are part of a growing number of states courageously standing up to President Biden to defend the most vulnerable.
“We are deeply grateful to the governor, as well as House author and member of SBA List’s National Pro-life Women’s Caucus Rep. Stephanie Klick (TX-91), Senate author and pro-life Democrat Eddie Lucio (TX-27), and all our local allies who’ve prioritized commonsense safety standards. This law was urgently needed and we hope many more states will follow their example.”
Texas joins Oklahoma, Montana, Indiana, Arkansas, and Arizona in enacting laws to stop the spread of abortion by mail.
Chemical abortions pose serious risks and constitute a rapidly growing percentage of U.S. abortions, according to recent national studies compiled in part by Charlotte Lozier Institute. Between September 2000 and February 2019 in the U.S.:
- More than 20 women died of complications from chemical abortions.
- More than 500 life-threatening complications were reported.
- Nearly 2,000 “severe” complications were reported.
Study authors also estimated that complications are significantly underreported in the U.S., with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relaxing reporting requirements even further in 2016.
