Washington, D.C. – Georgia Governor Brian Kemp yesterday signed into law S.B. 202, legislation to strengthen election security in the state.
The Election Transparency Initiative, a joint project of the American Principles Project and the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, praised the legislation. Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative, said:
“We applaud Governor Kemp and the Georgia assembly for their work to make elections simple and secure; easy to vote and hard to cheat. Georgia’s commitment to restoring trust and confidence in elections has galvanized an election integrity movement continuing to surge across the country. We encourage other states to follow Georgia’s lead and stand up to corrupt politicians who want to federalize election laws, tie the hands of states, and drown out legal voters.”
S.B. 202 will:
- Verify the accuracy of voter registration lists.
- Require photo ID verification for absentee voting.
- Protect absentee ballots by providing absentee ballots to all qualified voters who request them, but stopping the practice of mass mailing of absentee ballots or request forms.
- Prohibit private funding of election officials and government agencies which can lead to partisan election offices and corruption.
- Increase transparency by allowing election observers complete access to the election process.
Polling released this month by the Honest Elections Project shows:
- 64% of voters, including Black (51%) and Hispanic (66%) voters, as well as urban (59%) and Independent (61%) voters, want to strengthen voting safeguards that prevent fraud – not eliminate them.
- 77% of voters, including strong majorities of Republicans (92%), Independents (75%), and Democrats (63%) all support requiring voter ID.
- 64% of Black voters, 77% of Hispanics, and 76% of low-income voters reject the notion that presenting a form of ID at the ballot-box is a “burden.”
- Two-thirds of voters (66%) support increased protections on absentee voting, like requiring voter ID to vote absentee, which proposed federal bills, H.R.1 and S.1 expressly forbid, contrary to the clear will of the American people.
