SBA List Urges Lawmakers to Pass Popular, Sensible Abortion Limits
Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today issued a statement of support for Florida’s SB 404, a bill to require consent from a parent or legal guardian prior to a minor receiving an abortion. State Senator Kelli Stargel is spearheading the effort to advance the bill in the state senate. The companion legislation, championed by State Representative Erin Grall (FL-54), passed through committee and is ready for a floor vote in the House.
Anna Higgins, Florida lobbyist for Susan B. Anthony List, testified and offered the following comment:
“We strongly support this legislation to ensure parents have the chance to protect their young daughters facing an unexpected pregnancy,” said Anna Higgins, Florida lobbyist for Susan B. Anthony List. “It defies reason that, currently in Florida, a child cannot get a tattoo without their parent’s consent, but they do have access to an invasive, often dangerous procedure.”
“We are grateful to Senator Stargel and Representative Grall, both members of SBA List’s National Pro-life Women’s Caucus, for championing these bills in Florida,” added SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “These women are ideal advocates for policy designed to protect women and girls and save lives. They stand for the majority of Floridians who support this legislation, including majorities of Democrats, Independents, and even pro-choice voters.”
Polling released in 2019 found that 73% of Florida voters – including 60% of Democrats, 70% of Independents, and 58% of self-described pro-choice voters – support legislation to require parental consent before a minor girl can get an abortion (only 27% oppose). The same poll also found that 76% of Florida voters support a law prohibiting late-term abortions in the state.
