Democrats Double Down on Abortion Extremism Nationwide
Washington, D.C. – Ahead of President Trump’s visit to the state this weekend, Wisconsin Democratic Governor Tony Evers has said he will veto legislation to ensure babies born alive during failed abortions are treated with the same care that would be given to premature babies born at the same age. Evers said the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is “not a productive use of time.” Evers’ statement comes days after North Carolina Democratic Governor Roy Cooper vetoed similar legislation that had passed the state legislature with bipartisan support, and as another “Born-Alive” bill heads to the desk of Montana Democratic Governor Steve Bullock.
In response, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) issued the following statement:
“The overwhelming majority of Americans are dismayed by the extremism on display from elected officials nationwide, including Governor Evers, Governor Cooper, and Congressional Democrats currently blocking even a vote on the federal Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.“Seventy seven percent of Americans support this compassionate, common sense legislation – that includes 70 percent of Democrats. Elected officials are underestimating the political potency of this come election time.”
“In 2017, in just five states alone, at least 25 children were born alive during attempted abortions. The CDC estimates that between 2003 and 2014, at least 143 babies died after being born alive during abortions. CDC admits this estimate is likely low. It excludes states like California or New York, where the largest number of abortions is taking place, and states like New Mexico and Maryland where notorious late-term abortionists have set up shop.
“These are preventable deaths,” continued Dannenfelser. “The Democratic Party should loosen its vice-like political grip on its candidates and allow them to stand up for innocent children. We thank President Trump for championing this legislation to protect life. His leadership stands in sharp contrast to Democrat leaders tripping over themselves to oppose even the most reasonable measures in support of babies.”
Nearly 200 members of Congress have signed a discharge petition filed by House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) to hold a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. House Democratic Party leaders have refused more than 30 requests by members to vote on the bill. If a majority of representatives sign the petition, it will force a vote by the full House.
Nationwide polling released by SBA List finds that 77 percent of voters support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age (55 percent strongly support.)
In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide, following efforts in New York and Virginia to legalize abortion on demand through birth.
SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
