Nat’l Pro-life Group Calls on Bayh to Clarify Stance on Hyde Amendment

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) is calling on U.S. Senate candidate Evan Bayh of Indiana to state his position on the Hyde Amendment, longstanding bipartisan policy preventing federal taxpayer funding of abortion on-demand under Medicaid.

The platform ratified by Democrats in Philadelphia last month, for the first time, explicitly calls for the repeal of this policy and Hillary Clinton has pledged to repeal it if elected president.

SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser released the following comment:

“Evan Bayh has supported limits to abortion in the past, such as the ban on gruesome partial birth abortion, parental notification, and bans on taxpayer funds being used to promote abortion overseas. But Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine want to force Americans to pay for abortion on-demand, up until the moment of birth, with their taxpayer dollars. The Clinton-Kaine position is profoundly unpopular and several Senate Democrats have already stated their opposition to repealing Hyde, including Bayh’s fellow Hoosier Joe Donnelly, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania. Indiana families deserve to know whether Evan Bayh will fight for them, or toe the party line and stand in lockstep with Big Abortion.”

Bayh has a mixed record on abortion, scoring 60 percent with NARAL in 2008.

A Marist poll released in July found that a majority of Americans (62 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion including 45 percent of those who say they are “pro-choice” and 44 percent of Democrats.

Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $15.25 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
