SBA List: “Thank you for Standing Tall to Defend Life & Pro-life Americans”

Washington, D.C.Late last night during the budget resolution process known as “vote-a-rama,” West Virginia’s Democrat U.S. Senator Joe Manchin joined Republican Senators to signal support for the strong pro-life policies that received votes on the Senate floor:

  • The Hyde & Weldon Amendments, bipartisan, popular policy to stop taxpayer funding of abortion on demand, introduced by Senator James Lankford (R-OK).
  • The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which limits late-term abortions occurring past the point when science proves babies can feel pain, offered as an amendment by Senator John Kennedy (R-LA).
  • Protecting Individuals with Down Syndrome Act, which prohibits lethal discrimination abortions due to a diagnosis of Down syndrome, introduced by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK).

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) issued the following statement:

“While a majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for abortion on demand, and abhor the violence of painful, late abortions, as well as discriminatory abortions, most Senate Democrats have no problem ignoring their constituents to vote in lock-step with the abortion industry. But Senator Manchin has proven himself to be the notable exception by standing up for unborn children, their mothers, and pro-life American taxpayers last night with three strong pro-life votes. West Virginia is a deeply pro-life state, and Senator Manchin’s courageous votes have not gone unnoticed. We encourage him to continue standing tall for the unborn and the pro-life Americans of the Mountain State.”

The Hyde Amendment stops taxpayer funding of abortion on demand. Last month, the Pelosi-led House of Representatives passed a federal budget for FY22 that, for the first time in decades, did not include the Hyde Amendment and similar riders. Over the past four decades, the Hyde Amendment has saved over 2.4 million lives. SBA List has launched a six-figure digital ad campaign exposing the pro-abortion extremism of Democrats for their opposition to Hyde. The campaign targets Senators Warnock and Kelly, as well as vulnerable House Democrats up for re-election next year in competitive districts.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, introduced by Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would limit abortions at a point by which unborn babies can feel pain. A growing body of scientific evidence proves that babies can feel pain by at least 20 weeks, if not earlier in pregnancy. The United States joins China & North Korea in permitting these painful abortions, which are banned in almost all European nations.

The Protecting Individuals with Down Syndrome Act, introduced by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), prohibits lethal discrimination abortions due to a diagnosis of Down syndrome. Polling shows that 70% of Americans, including the majority of Democrat and Independent voters, oppose abortion based on the fact that an unborn child may have Down syndrome.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
