The Arkansas Legislature moved closer to passing a bill that would ban partial-birth abortion and increase the penalties doctors who violate this law. Rep. Dawn Creekmore, a Democrat, who sponsored the bill, said that she fought for the legislation because she is afraid that the federal ban on partial-birth abortions will be overturned.
The legislation provides for an increase to six years in jail time for violations, as opposed to the two years specified by the federal ban. During the debate, pro-abortion advocates were hostile toward legislators and pro-life groups, cursing and accusing them of not wanting to reduce abortions.
The bill was approved by the House Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee and will now go to the full state House for a debate and a vote. It is unclear what position Gov. Mike Beebe will take on the bill.
