Communications Director, Charlotte Lozier Institute

Description: The Charlotte Lozier Institute, the research arm of Susan B. Anthony List, is seeking a Communications Director to join its team of passionate pro-life scholars and experts to promote and advance the organization’s groundbreaking research in science, statistics, and law, to the end of establishing lifesaving law and public policy. Working with the CLI executive team and SBA List communications staff, the Communications Director is responsible for developing and executing a multi-faceted communications strategy to reach media, policymakers, coalitions, and grassroots. Ideal candidates are strongly committed to the life issue, have experience in communications/PR, are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple priorities with little assistance. This role reports to the Vice President of Communications at Susan B. Anthony List.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Communicate with press on behalf of CLI; write press releases and statements, facilitate op-eds from CLI staff, contributors, and scholars;
  • Develop a caseload of health care, policy, science, and court reporters, and pitch stories under the direction of the SBA List VP of Comms
  • Field incoming press inquiries for CLI, speak with reporters on phone and over email
  • Work with SBA List Government Affairs team to ensure tailored communications to policymakers and coalitions partners; this includes:
    • Managing promotion of fact sheets, policy papers, legal briefs, and special reports
    • Creating and ensuring distribution/promotion of fact sheets, policy papers, legal briefs, and special reports
    • Managing CLI presence at coalitions events and conferences
  • Promote CLI Scholars as expert witnesses
    • Produce and update promotional literature/brochures for state lawmakers and state coalition allies explaining CLI scholars’ areas of expertise
    • Promote upcoming testimonies, pitch state and local media stories
  • Oversee CLI online presence including multiple websites
    • Work with CLI staff and scholars to ensure content for sites is up to date, ensure scheduled communications to various email lists
      • Forthcoming Mifeprex site
    • Work with SBA communications writer to produce biweekly CLI Newsletter
    • Maintain CLI social media accounts including Facebook and Twitter
  • Serve as project manager and liaison between CLI/SBA and vendors for video, graphics, print publication, and website projects

Job Requirements:

  • Experience in a communications/PR role with familiarity in life issues law and policy, Capitol Hill experience strongly preferred
  • Strongly pro-life and committed to goals of CLI and SBA List
  • Experience pitching media
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong research and reading skills and ability to digest and explain detailed policy documents pertaining to pro-life laws, life sciences, statistics, and public policy
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel; ability to produce high-quality material
  • Ability and commitment to work with other communications and CLI staff to ensure timely completion of projects as well as coordination of messaging
  • Highly attentive to detail
  • Time management and organizational skills.

Communications Associate, Life Issues Institute

Description: Life Issues Institute, the grassroots education partner of Susan B. Anthony List, is looking for a Communications Associate with strong writing skills, research skills, creativity, digital experience, and an entrepreneurial spirit to join our team. While LII is headquartered in Cincinnati, OH, the Communications Associate would work alongside the SBA List communications team just outside Washington, D.C. This position reports to the SBA List Vice President of Communications.
This fast-paced position will oversee and implement communicate to the pro-life message through email, social media, app, podcast, TV, and radio. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to develop high-quality written materials, manage multiple projects at one time, and analyze different reporting mechanism to determine which messages and mediums are most successful. Candidates should demonstrate ability to identify problems and think creatively to develop solutions they can implement on their own as well as a part of a team. Because the position will work with two teams, including remotely, candidate absolutely must have strong inter-personal communications skills and a commitment to the missions of both Life Issues Institute and Susan B. Anthony List.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Research and prep bullet points or drafts for weekly LII mass communications including Brad Mattes’ weekly radio commentaries and emails
  • Review reports for LII radio commentaries, refine and pitch targeted station contacts
  • Manage all LII social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud
  • Manage LII websites and make weekly updates
  • Produce weekly podcast featuring LII President Brad Mattes and guests, including SBA List staff, research guests, lead on promotion and advertising of the podcast
  • Monitor email accounts associated with the LII and reply to incoming grassroots inquiries
  • Draft and edit copy as assigned including: memos, internal and external emails, press releases, pitches, talking points, blog posts, op-eds, and miscellaneous copy
  • Read and track journalists and outlets covering pro-life stories and angles of interest
  • Track media clips and leverage in pitches, donor materials, social media; use to develop media analytics reports
  • Promote LII resources including making cold calls to radio and Television networks to pitch TV and radio specials; interviews with LII and SBA spokespeople; research speaking opportunities

The LII Communications Associate collaborates daily with LII President Brad Mattes to implement LII’s mission. The associate is responsible for working with the LII Team and SBA List communications team to ensure shared goals are achieved and will occasionally work on SBA List specific items.
