Jackson’s Extreme Views on Abortion Are Out of Step With Science & American Consensus

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of a U.S. Senate vote on President Biden’s Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) announced that it will score against Jackson’s confirmation. The group’s score letter reads in part:

During the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings…senators asked Judge Jackson many thoughtful, poignant questions about life, abortion, and the law. While Judge Jackson was unable to answer questions surrounding ongoing litigation, there were several answers she gave—or refused to give—that were both illuminating and deeply troubling. She could not answer basic questions that are fundamental to the ability to administer justice fairly and impartially…it is clear that Judge Jackson cannot be relied upon to protect the inalienable rights of all citizens, born and unborn, mothers and children. Further, she seemed confused about the ideas of viability and fetal pain, and treated infanticide as a question under the umbrella of abortion.

During the hearings senators also heard the testimony of pro-life advocate Eleanor McCullen, the lead plaintiff in a free speech case similar to McGuire v. Reilly, in which Jackson co-authored an amicus brief supporting a Massachusetts law that created a floating “buffer zone” to prevent pro-life sidewalk counselors from approaching to speak with women outside of abortion facilities.

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser added:

“Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing was another disturbing glimpse of her views on life and the law, which are far out of the mainstream. It is a scientific fact that unborn children are living human beings who can feel pain. Lawmakers across the country acting on the will of the people agree our radical abortion laws desperately need to be modernized. Jackson’s shocking level of ignorance recalls the flawed science and logic behind the Supreme Court’s abortion precedents and, with the Court reconsidering those flawed decisions this very moment in the Dobbs case, has no place on the bench today.

“We thank all our pro-life Senate allies whose questioning exposed Jackson’s extreme views. Joe Biden’s pick clearly caters to the abortion lobby. We urge all senators to stand with unborn children and their mothers and reject this nominee.”

Previously a coalition of nearly 40 national and state pro-life leaders spearheaded by SBA List sent a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee leaders detailing the nominee’s hostility toward pro-life Americans.

A recent Wall Street Journal poll finds that 48% of Americans support a 15-week abortion limit, compared to 43% who do not. Polling consistently shows a strong majority of Americans reject abortion extremism. SBA List is tracking the extremism of the Biden-Harris administration at sbaprolife.org/biden-harris.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
