Washington, D.C.The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) celebrated today as the Tennessee Legislature passed legislation to stop dangerous mail-order abortion drugs, sending vital safeguards for women and unborn children to pro-life Governor Bill Lee (R).

SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised the Legislature and Lee, saying:

“Tennessee lawmakers are taking a stand for women and children. Mail-order abortion drugs pose a growing public health threat. The profit-driven abortion industry and pro-abortion Democrats in Washington have pushed to turn every post office and pharmacy into an abortion center, with no in-person medical oversight. These drugs are dangerous – sending women to the emergency room at a rate that has skyrocketed 500% since the early 2000s.

“We thank all our local allies, especially our National Pro-Life Caucus Member Rep. Debra Moody and Sen. Mike Bell who sponsored this legislation and our friend Will Brewer at Tennessee Right to Life, for taking action. Gov. Bill Lee is a courageous pro-life champion and we look forward to seeing him swiftly sign it into law.”

first-of-its-kind study in the journal Health Services and Managerial Epidemiology found that the rate of emergency room visits related to chemical abortion drugs increased by more than 500% from 2002-2015. In the last year Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas have enacted state-level safeguards against mail-order abortion drugs, with additional states considering action.

Analysis by Charlotte Lozier Institute finds that 47% of abortions in Tennessee were chemical abortions as of 2018. A state law enacted in 2020 requires that women undergoing chemical abortions be provided information on safe, effective abortion pill reversal.

Alternatives to Abortion: Pro-life pregnancy centers in Tennessee provided vital services to more than 65,000 women, men, youth and families in 2019, at a $5.2 million value, including $3.2 million in medical services.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
