Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) celebrated as Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt (R) signed legislation to stop abortions when an unborn child’s heartbeat can be detected. The Oklahoma Heartbeat Act (S.B. 1503) was sponsored by Sen. Julie Daniels (a member of SBA List’s National Pro-Life Caucus) and Rep. Todd Russ.
Stitt has promised to sign every piece of pro-life legislation that reaches his desk.
SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised Stitt and Oklahoma lawmakers, saying:
“Unborn babies are human beings, with beating hearts by six weeks. From this day forward, as many as 3,800 unborn children a year and their mothers are safe from abortion in Oklahoma. Americans overwhelmingly support commonsense abortion limits that save lives and want to rein in pro-abortion extremism. We are so grateful to Governor Stitt, Sen. Julie Daniels and all our Sooner State allies who worked tirelessly to enact some of the nation’s most protective pro-life laws. With millions of lives at stake in the Dobbs case and pro-abortion Democrats threatening to impose abortion on demand until birth at any cost, leadership like theirs is vital to ensure the voice of the people is heard.”
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is a case involving a Mississippi law that limits abortion after 15 weeks. The Supreme Court will address whether all pre-viability abortion limits are unconstitutional. Science shows unborn children have a detectable heartbeat by six weeks and can feel pain by 15 weeks if not earlier. Public opinion polls consistently show that the strong majority of Americans reject abortion extremism.
Alternatives to Abortion: Oklahoma’s Choosing Childbirth Program, established in 2017, supports pregnancy centers by providing grants for services such as ultrasounds, medical exams, counseling, parenting classes, maternity care and more. In 2019 Gov. Stitt signed a budget appropriating $2 million for the program.
