Legislation Includes Hyde Protections; Excludes Forgivable Loan Funding for Planned Parenthood

Washington, D.C. –  Today the United States Congress passed the CARES Act in response to Coronavirus, sending the bill to the President’s desk. The legislation applies the pro-life Hyde Amendment to funding streams where necessary, preventing taxpayer funds from paying for abortion on-demand. In addition, the CARES Act limits abortion giant Planned Parenthood from accessing forgivable small business loans available under the bill.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) issued the following response:

“We are thankful to President Trump and our pro-life Congressional leaders for ensuring the CARES Act includes vital pro-life protections to ensure that these massive funding streams cannot be used as slush funds for the big abortion industry led by Planned Parenthood.

“At a time when Americans are working together to make sacrifices to keep healthy as a nation, the abortion industry led by Planned Parenthood refuses to stop its abortion enterprise, using up precious personal protective equipment on elective abortions and unashamedly promoting dangerous surgical and chemical abortions. They are preying upon the anxieties and fears of women and families. We thank elected officials across the country who refuse to give them a free pass and are holding them accountable. Their shameful actions demonstrate why they don’t deserve a dime in the CARES Act, given that they truly don’t care.”

This week, more than 50 pro-life leaders submitted a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, urging public health officials to oppose the promotion of abortion in the midst of the national response to COVID-19.

In Ohio, Planned Parenthood defied the order from Governor Mike DeWine to suspend services during the pandemic. Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses filed a lawsuit in Texas against Governor Greg Abbot over his directive to stop all non-essential services in the state, including abortions.

SBA List and its research arm, Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) have spearheaded the pro-life response to the Coronavirus at sbalist.org/coronavirus.

SBA List is a network of more than 837,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
