St.Lucie County defunds Planned Parenthood

The people of St.Lucie County, Florida came together in an effort to defund Planned Parenthood and establish better programs to reduce teen pregnancies. For the last ten years, Planned Parenthood has offered sex education and teen pregnancy prevention programs in the though this has clearly not resolved the county’s problems.  As a result, people from all over the county spoke out and the council unanimously voted to strip funding from Planned Parenthood.

Sean Boyle, executive director of the Children’s Service Council said:

“We have a responsibility as a government entity both to the children and the families of St.Lucie County as well as the tax payers and I think today’s decision continues our trend of funding quality programs… Over four hundred thousand dollars are being given to Kids Connected by Design for its Healthy Decision Making Program and the St. Lucie County Boys and Girls Club for its after school/summer programs. Residents recognize that Planned Parenthood has failed to properly educate their children and new measures are being taken to better educate their children.”

Cory Neering, Vice President of education at Planned Parenthood said he was “saddened” to have their funding taken away “but we do understand the tremendous pressure that the council was under.”

The council? Neering’s concern should lie with the people of St.Lucie County not just the members of the board. This just goes to show where Planned Parenthood’s priorities lie: not with the people they are supposedly educating but rather the people that are handing them money. Fortunately the people of St.Lucie County were successful in defunding Planned Parenthood and implementing better programs for their children.
