SBA List’s Musgrave: Infanticide is not a partisan issue

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing, Abortion Until Birth: The Need to Pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act today, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. in Dirksen Senate Office Building 226. Witnesses include Melissa Ohden, founder of the Abortion Survivors Network; Dr. Donna Harrison, executive director of the American Association of Pro-Life Ob/Gyns and associate scholar with SBA List’s research arm Charlotte Lozier Institute; and Catherine Glenn Foster, J.D., president and C.E.O. of Americans United for Life and associate scholar with Charlotte Lozier Institute.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC), SBA List Vice President of Government Affairs Marilyn Musgrave, and pro-life leaders will hold a press conference in the same room immediately following the hearing.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation introduced by Sen. Graham along with Judiciary Committee members Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), John Kennedy (R-LA), Mike Crapo (R-ID), John Cornyn (R-TX), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) and Mike Lee (R-Utah), would limit late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy – a point when science shows unborn children can feel pain.

WHAT:          Hearing and press conference supporting the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

WHO:             Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC)

WHEN:          Tuesday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m.

“Abortion survivors, as well as medical and legal experts have all given powerful testimony in support of this popular bill to stop painful late-term abortions,” said SBA List’s Musgrave. “Now it is time for every member of Congress to go on record and let the American people know where they stand on abortion up to the moment of birth and even beyond. We thank Chairman Graham for his leadership in the Senate and our pro-life allies in the House for fighting to protect babies who survive abortions despite being repeatedly blocked by Speaker Pelosi and Democratic Party leaders. Infanticide is not a partisan issue – these common-ground bills ought to sail through Congress with bipartisan support.”

Amid nationwide outcry sparked by efforts in New YorkVirginiaVermontNew MexicoMaryland, and Illinois to legalize abortion on demand through birth, national polling released by SBA List shows that 77 percent of voters support legislation to ensure that a baby who survives a failed abortion be given the same medical treatment as any other baby born prematurely at the same age (55 percent strongly support) and 62 percent of voters oppose legislation to allow late-term abortions, even up to the point when a woman is in labor (50 percent strongly oppose). Democrats in Congress have repeatedly blocked the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

President Trump in his State of the Union address called out the Democratic Party for their support of late-term abortion and even infanticide and called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

SBA List is a network of more than 700,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
