SBA List Commends Efforts of Energy & Commerce, Judiciary Committees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the wake of the Kermit Gosnell trial, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI), announced today that they have sent a letter to public health officials in each state demanding answers as to how they regulate abortion facilities. Yesterday the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), sent a similar letter to state attorneys general. Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ), Civil Justice Subcommittee Chairman, joined in calling for responses to questions about endorsement of late term abortion restrictions and “born alive” statues. Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) President Marjorie Dannenfelser praised these efforts and further called for Congress to take action to address the inhumanity revealed in the late-term abortion industry.

The SBA List has compiled an initial fact sheet on abortion industry negligence and brutality occurring nationwide.

“Kermit Gosnell is the tip of the iceberg. Two former employees have blown the whistle on ‘meat market-style assembly line abortions’ at Planned Parenthood of Delaware. Hollywood-celebrated late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart has been caught on tape calling babies in the womb ‘meat in a crock pot.’ The inhumanity of the abortion industry has never been clearer and now it’s time for America to see how deep this lack of respect for life goes,” said Dannenfelser. “Leadership in investigation and oversight is encouraging and the vital first step. Congress must address the multi-state breakdown of oversight in the abortion industry as well as the barbarism of abortions performed on children capable of feeling pain and surviving outside the womb.

“Congress must address its role in protecting the human rights of children late in pregnancy. The few, mere inches that separate a child in the womb from a child outside the womb should never determine whether its intentional ‘demise’ is permitted by law.  Americans overwhelmingly oppose late-term abortions and the law should follow their instinctive resistance to this dehumanizing and degrading practice.”

Additional signers of the Energy and Commerce letter include Reps. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Joe Pitts (R-PA), Tim Murphy (R-PA), Mike Burgess (R-TX), and Joe Barton (R-TX).

Undercover footage released this week from Live Action shows late-term abortionist Leroy Carhart, recently celebrated at the Sundance Film Festival, comparing a dead child aborted in the womb to “meat in a crock pot.”

Last month, two former nurses at the Planned Parenthood of Delaware abortion clinic quit, citing “ridiculously unsafe,” and unsanitary conditions, and “a meat-market style of assembly-line abortions.” In Delaware, abortion clinics are not subject to routine inspections.

The Susan B. Anthony List, and its affiliated Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, are dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women.  The SBA List is a network of more than 365,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
