Catholic Health Association backs abortion funding ban

The Catholic Health Association caused quite a controversy last year when they came out in support of Obamacare, taxpayer funded abortion included, in direct contradiction of the positions of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and every major pro-life group.

Now, the CHA is supporting the Protect Life Act, which would prevent taxpayer funded abortion in the new health care law.

Sr. Carol Keehan, the CEO of the Catholic Health Association and a defender of the Obama administration, still insists Obamacare does not fund abortions. But she says the bill “will provide further protection by codifying the ‘Hyde Amendment’ relative to the new health care reform law.”

“We also appreciate the bill’s additions to the conscience protections which hospitals and health care providers already have under the Weldon Amendment,” she said.

In response, Brian Burch of CatholicVote sent out an email saying, “Why thump our chests now that they have done the right thing? Instead of sneering, we have a different message for the Catholic Health Association: ‘Whatever your motives, the members of CatholicVote are happy to have your help in getting this legislation passed. Catholics may disagree on how to best provide affordable and accessible health care, but we must be unified in protecting innocent human life!’”

We agree, and we applaud Sr. Keehan for doing what’s right.
